Media reports Iranian leader wounded in June Israeli airstrikes

(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained minor injuries during Israeli airstrikes on an underground facility in Tehran last month, according to Iran’s state-affiliated Fars news agency.

The June 16 attack reportedly involved six bombs targeting access points to a secret bunker in western Tehran, where Pezeshkian and other senior officials were meeting as part of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The explosions caused a power outage, forcing the president to evacuate through an emergency exit, during which he reportedly injured his leg.

Fars claimed the Israeli operation mirrored the September 2024 strikes in Beirut that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The strike took place during a 12-day conflict that ended with a US-brokered ceasefire on June 24. Throughout the hostilities, Israeli forces reportedly killed multiple senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists.

In a recent interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, Pezeshkian alleged that Israel had attempted to assassinate him. Israel has not publicly responded to the claim.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the strikes were aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The US supported the attacks and joined Israeli operations against Iranian nuclear sites on June 22. Tehran, which denies seeking nuclear weapons, condemned the strikes as unjustified aggression.
