Merz voices criticism against Israel plan to forcibly relocate Palestinians
Speaking in an interview with public broadcaster ARD, Merz described the current situation in Gaza as “unacceptable” and called for increased humanitarian assistance alongside a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
“I have not liked what the Israeli government has been doing in the Gaza Strip for many weeks now. I have also expressed that,” Merz said, noting that he had conveyed his concerns directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their phone conversations.
The conservative leader emphasized hopes that Europe, together with the United States, could help bring about a resolution culminating in a two-state solution.
“The Palestinians have a right to have a place where they can live,” Merz stated, underscoring his view that the ongoing developments in Gaza cannot be accepted.
Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed that he had ordered the military to prepare a plan for relocating all Palestinians to a so-called “humanitarian city” planned for the ruins of Rafah in southern Gaza.
