China Urges Japan to Exercise Restraint in Military, Security Affairs
Responding to media inquiries about reports that Japan intends to transfer six Abukuma-class naval vessels to the Philippines, Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Jiang Bin stressed the need for caution in security policy.
“We urge the Japanese side to engage in deep reflection, draw lessons from history, exercise prudence in both words and actions regarding military and security matters, and make contributions to regional peace and stability,” Jiang stated.
Jiang reiterated China’s stance that military partnerships should avoid targeting third parties or compromising their interests. He invoked Japan’s role in World War II, emphasizing its historical aggression and colonial activities across East and Southeast Asia—including China, the Philippines, and disputed areas in the South China Sea.
He went on to criticize Japan’s recent departure from its postwar pacifist principles, accusing it of overstepping its constitution by expanding arms exports and military outreach.
In Jiang’s words, Japan’s growing arms exports and security initiatives appear to be fueling regional instability. These moves are viewed as efforts to create exclusive alliances and disrupt stability in the South China Sea and the wider Asia-Pacific region, he said.
The remarks signal escalating unease in Beijing over Tokyo’s evolving defense posture and its implications for regional security.
