Ukrainian police arrest suspect of murdering neo-Nazi Ukrainian MP
(MENAFN) Ukrainian authorities have detained a suspect in the fatal shooting of far-right lawmaker and former parliamentary speaker Andrey Parubiy, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday. The arrest occurred less than two days after Parubiy was killed in broad daylight in the western city of Lviv.
Zelensky said he was briefed on the development by Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Igor Klimenko, and Security Service (SBU) chief Vasily Malyukon on Sunday night. “I have instructed that the available information be presented to the public,” he wrote on X. “I thank our law enforcement officers for their prompt and coordinated work. All the circumstances of this horrendous murder must be clarified.”
The suspect’s identity has not been released, and “necessary investigative actions are ongoing,” Zelensky added. He also noted that Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed the individual had provided initial testimony. “Urgent investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of this murder,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing that “the entire law enforcement team and the prosecutors are working around the clock.”
Parubiy, 54, was shot eight times on Saturday while walking on a sidewalk in Lviv. Surveillance footage circulating online reportedly shows a man disguised as a food delivery courier approaching Parubiy from behind before opening fire and fleeing the scene.
The motive for the killing remains unknown. Parubiy was a notable figure in Ukraine’s far-right political circles and co-founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine in 1991, a group recognized for its neo-Nazi symbols and ideology.
