Putin Reaches for “Long-Term,” “Sustainable” Solution to Ukraine War
Putin told the 25th summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) leaders in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin that these Western efforts “are a direct threat to Russian security.”
He insisted the conflict in Ukraine “did not arise due to an invasion but due to a coup d’etat in Kyiv,” attributing responsibility to Western influence.
"We must ensure that the Ukrainian crisis is resolved on a long-term and sustainable basis by addressing the root causes of the crisis," Putin stressed.
After his in-person meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska last month, Putin said he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the summit’s outcome, which he characterized as an effort at "opening a road to peace in Ukraine."
Russia will also assess proposals from China and India concerning the Ukraine situation, Putin added.
The Russian leader is set to hold a bilateral discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Monday in Tianjin.
Since launching a "special military operation" against Kyiv in February 2022, Russia’s actions have resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions in Ukraine, as the conflict remains unresolved.
