Trump’s aide is to be US Ambassador to India
(MENAFN) Sergio Gor, a long-time aide to President Donald Trump, is set to become the next US Ambassador to India while also managing Washington’s relations with other South and Central Asian nations.
Gor, who has published books under Trump’s name, raised millions for his 2024 campaign, and staffed Washington with loyalists during the president’s second term, was promoted last week. Trump described him as a "great friend" and someone he could "fully trust" to carry out his agenda.
The 38-year-old assumes the role amid tensions between the US and India, stemming from Trump’s steep tariffs on Indian goods. His appointment has sparked mixed reactions in India: some view the move as a positive signal for bilateral ties, while others question the decision to have the ambassador also oversee relations with South and Central Asian countries, including Pakistan, with which India has a fraught relationship.
Experts warn that Gor’s broad regional responsibilities could risk US overreach in sensitive areas, such as the Kashmir dispute—a key concern for India. "The special envoy's additional designation will likely create some challenges, at least in India. India typically prefers not to be 'hyphenated' with Pakistan," said Alyssa Ayres from a US foreign policy think tank.
