Death Toll from Afghanistan Earthquake Climbs to 800

(MENAFN) At least 812 people have been confirmed dead and 2,817 injured following a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, according to Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Afghan interim government.

The worst-hit areas are in Kunar province, where the districts of Nurgal, Suki, Watapur, and Chapa Dara have reported 800 fatalities and 2,500 injuries.

In Nangarhar province, 12 deaths and 255 injuries have been recorded. Laghman and Nuristan provinces also reported casualties, with 58 and 4 injuries respectively.

The earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar, at a shallow depth of eight kilometers.

Authorities warned that the casualty toll is expected to rise as more information comes in from remote and mountainous areas, where access remains difficult. Relief efforts have been hampered by the region’s rugged terrain, but emergency response teams have been dispatched to accelerate search, rescue, and aid operations.
