Xi Unveils Global Governance Initiative at SCO Plus Summit
This summit included not only member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) but also its dialogue partners and observer nations.
This expanded gathering, known as SCO Plus, saw participation from Türkiye, which is among the 15 dialogue partners affiliated with the group.
The bloc also includes two observer states. The event served as a platform for Xi Jinping to outline his vision for enhancing international cooperation and global governance.
In his keynote address at the summit, President Xi stated, “I look forward to working with all countries for a more just and equitable global governance system and advancing toward a community with a shared future for humanity.”
He emphasized that global governance is currently “at a new crossroads,” signaling the urgency for reform and stronger collaboration among nations.
Xi’s initiative urges participating countries in SCO Plus to embrace sovereign equality, uphold the rule of law at the international level, commit to multilateral cooperation, and prioritize a people-focused approach.
He stressed the importance of “taking real actions” rather than offering only rhetoric.
As part of the new plan, Xi announced a series of humanitarian efforts to be implemented over the next five years.
These include providing medical treatment for 500 children with congenital heart disease, performing 5,000 cataract surgeries, and conducting 10,000 cancer screenings across various SCO member nations.
The GGI is the latest in a series of proposals put forth by Xi in recent years.
It follows previous initiatives centered on international security, cultural exchange, and sustainable development—demonstrating China’s ongoing efforts to shape a more inclusive global framework.
