Local Syrian official gets harmed by gunfire, no identity of attacker found

(MENAFN) A local official in southern Syria was critically injured by gunfire in the city of Daraa on Monday, according to state media.

A state-run TV reported that Muneef al-Zaim, a member of the Public Relations Office of the Daraa Provincial Council, was hospitalized after being shot by unidentified assailants. No further details have been released regarding the perpetrators.

Daraa has experienced a rise in Israeli military activity, including air and ground operations, which have reportedly violated Syria’s sovereignty.

Syria has seen major political changes in recent months. President Bashar al-Assad, who had led the country for nearly 25 years, reportedly left for Russia in December, ending the long-standing Ba’ath Party regime. A new transitional administration headed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
