German Business Confidence Drops Sharply
The ifo Institute reported that its business climate indicator fell to 84.4 in April, down from 86.3 in March, falling short of analysts’ expectations of 85.7.
“The German economy is being hit hard by the Iran crisis,” ifo President Clemens Fuest said.
Firms’ evaluation of present conditions decreased to 85.4 from 86.7, while future expectations dropped more markedly to 83.3 from 85.9.
“The German economy is losing its confidence,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at the ifo Institute, emphasizing that morale deteriorated across all sectors.
These figures follow separate data indicating that Germany’s private sector entered contraction territory in April for the first time in nearly a year, reinforcing evidence that the nation’s recovery is being slowed by energy and trade disruptions tied to tensions in the Middle East.
Earlier this week, Germany’s Economy Ministry revised down its growth projections for 2026 and 2027, while increasing its inflation outlook, pointing to the effects of rising energy expenses and softer external demand.
