Colombia's President Arrives in Venezuela for Rodriguez Talks

(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro arrived in Venezuela on Friday for direct talks with Acting President Delcy Rodriguez — the first visit by a foreign head of state to Caracas since a U.S. military operation on Jan. 3 resulted in the capture and removal of former President Nicolás Maduro.

The trip marks a notable shift in tone from Petro, who had initially characterized Maduro's detention as a "kidnapping." The visit signals a pragmatic recalibration as Bogotá moves to stabilize its 1,240-mile shared border with Venezuela and explore deeper economic integration under Rodriguez's transitional administration.

Border security topped the agenda, with both leaders pledging that the governmental transition in Caracas would not slow efforts to dismantle organized drug-trafficking networks. Rodriguez confirmed the two nations had agreed to develop coordinated military plans and activate real-time intelligence-sharing mechanisms.

"Drug trafficking groups should know that we are taking decisive steps to combat these crimes," Rodriguez said from Miraflores Palace, or the president's house. "Both countries have agreed to establish mechanisms for gathering intelligence immediately."

Talks also produced at least seven cooperation agreements through the third session of the Colombian-Venezuelan Neighborhood Commission, with a strong focus on economic self-reliance and intra-regional trade. Both delegations emphasized a strategy of "import substitution" — prioritizing bilateral sourcing over external markets — across energy, health, and environmental sectors.

"It makes no sense for Colombia or Venezuela to look elsewhere for what we can achieve within our own borders. We must recognize that we are one people, one country that is reconnecting and coming together for commercial development, based on the productive capacities of our sectors, both in Colombia and in Venezuela," Rodriguez said.

Petro described the bilateral relationship in fraternal terms, emphasizing the inseparable ties between the two neighboring nations.

Rodriguez noted that Petro was among the first world leaders to reach out following Maduro's removal, lending his visit additional symbolic weight as Caracas faces sustained pressure from Washington, where Maduro is awaiting trial on federal narco-terrorism charges.
